Destination Mars was commissioned by the BBC as a special edition
of the BBC 2 science series Horizon. It was transmitted on July 4th
1997, the evening of Pathfinders landing on the surface of Mars.
The documentary charted the successes and failures of previous US and
Russian missions to Mars and looked in detail at the plans for Pathfinders
programme of exploration using the robot rover "Sojourner".
The production took six months to complete and involved extensive filming
in America (at NASA and JPL) and in Russia and the use of American and
Russian film archive.
